Ismail Bin Abdul Rashid Watenga, also known as Watenga Isma, was born on May 15, 1995, in Mbale City, Uganda. Growing up in Namunsi, Nakaloke Town Council, he attended different schools like Namunsi Primary School, Nakaloke Islamic SS, Manafwa High School, and St. Mary’s Kitende. Although he briefly went to Kampala International University, his love for football led him to focus on playing for Vipers SC.
In his football career, Watenga played for clubs like Kamu Kamu FC and Jami FC before joining Vipers SC. He won domestic league titles and the Uganda Cup with them. He moved to Ethipio Bunna FC in 2018. Internationally, he played for Uganda's national team since 2013, earning honors like the best goalkeeper at the 2015 CECAFA Championship. Watenga finds inspiration from legendary goalkeepers like Oliver Khan and Dennis Onyango, pushing him to excel on and off the field.
His desire to mentor talent and provide opportunities for the underprivileged led him to establish the Ismail Watenga Foundation. Through this foundation, he aims to empower youth, offer mentorship, and create platforms for those who may not have had opportunities otherwise. Watenga's commitment to making a difference off the field demonstrates his dedication to uplifting others and creating a positive impact beyond his football career.
